My Current Views: Revision of Seche Vite, Helpful or Harmful

In 2011, I wrote a post about Seche Vite Topcoat, and whether it was harmful or helpful.  I haven’t blogged since January, 2012. I don’t check on my blog often, but I am aware of the comments made and read them. So, I decided to address the comments in this post, and give an update on my views.

I’ve been debating for the past few months about how I should approach this. Since this post was written,  I have made some changes in my lifestyle. I’m a lot more conscious of what I put into my body, and what I put on my body. For instance, I no longer eat foods that contain ingredients such as bht, bha, azodicarbonamide, and dyes such as yellow 5, yellow 6, to name a few. I’m just a lot more aware of what chemicals are put in products and I now choose to be proactive about what I purchase and how it affects my health. I’m not saying that I have been negatively affected by such products, but I feel better about myself when I attempt to live healthier.

In respects to the article, I hadn’t read it in sometime. I really hoped I didn’t give what seemed like an endorsement of Seche Vite.  At the time, with the information I was given, I felt that the amount of toulene presented in the topcoat wasn’t extremely harmful. And perhaps it isn’t. I still haven’t used Seche Vite, and now that I am more health conscious, there is no way I would use it, however miniscule the risk would be for adverse reactions.

I do have a couple of topcoats that I really like. Loreal’s topcoat is really good, except that it got thick and goopy when there was about 1/4 left in bottle and wouldn’t apply smoothly. Right now I’m using Nina Ultra Pro’s Topcoat I found at Sally’s and so far no complaints here.

Anyway, all that being said, I am not a healthcare professional. I’m not a scientist. This is a recreational blog. I’m just someone who adores nail polish and nail polish accessories (shout out King of the Hill)! I had some questions, found some answers, and thought I would share. My opinions change as my awareness grows.  As always, please follow manufacturer instructions when using any product.

Seche Vite and Toluene: Harmless or Harmful?

*UPDATE* Please click here for current views.

After dealing with one top coat failure after another, I decided to investigate and compare top coats online before purchasing another one. I stayed up late one night scouring nail and beauty blogs, reviews websites, and forums for the best and long-lasting top coat out there. One name was ubiquitous: Seche Vite. Reviews from all over the internet lauded the top coat as THE best. Everything I read about it blew any other top coat I had ever heard of out of the water. Excited doesn’t even begin to describe how I felt to finally come across a seemingly perfect top coat. I was ready to run out and buy some at 1 in the morning, I was so thrilled.

The Holy Grail of top coats?

Wearing a satisfactory job-is-finally-done smile as I was about to close out the last website I was on, I read a final comment that smacked that smug smile right off my face. It basically stated that Seche Vite can cause birth defects and shouldn’t be used.

Uh, say what?!

After sitting back and muttering “ain’t that a bitch”, I wanted to find out exactly how and why this top coat was dangerous. Apparently on the back of each box of Seche Vite there is a disclaimer that states: “WARNING! This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm.” I went to the store to check it out for myself the next day, and it did in fact state that on the back of the box.

Ok… Now what? What exactly is in this top coat that causes so-called birth defects?

Thinking I would find a quick answer in a few minutes that night, I actually spent a few days digging around to find an answer. I found that the deeper I looked, the more questions I had. I’ve narrowed down the most pertinent questions I had concerning toluene, and the best answers that I found. There are links at the bottom of this post if you would like further reading concerning this matter. It’s extensive!
